Definitions
  • Bloodline - The horse's pedigree.
  • Broodmare - A mare (female horse) used for breeding purposes.
  • Claiming Race - Race in which a horse may be purchased at the end of the race at a specified price.
  • Colt - Young (under five years old) male horse that has not been gelded.
  • Daily Double - When you pick the winner of two consecutive races.
  • Dam - The horse's mother.
  • Dead Heat - A tie at the end of a race.
  • Exacta - When you pick the first two winning horses in exact order in the same race.
  • Filly - Young (under five years old) horse that has not been bred.
  • Foal - A 'baby' horse, generally under one yer old.
  • Furlong - 1/8 or a mile.
  • Gelding - A horse that has been castrated.
  • Groom - A stable worker who takes care of a horse.
  • Hand - Four inches.
  • Handicap Race - Race in which the horses have been handicapped using weights based on their previous race performance.
  • Horse - Male horse over five years old that has not been gelded.
  • Jockey - Rider of racehorses in horseraces.
  • Longshot - Horse that is not very likely to win with high odds payoffs if it does.
  • Maiden Race - Race which involves horses that have never won.
  • Mare - Female horse that has been bred and/or is over five years old.
  • Place - When a horse comes in second place.
  • Post Time - The time that a race begins.
  • Purse - Total amount of prize money for a particular race.
  • Scratch - When a horse is taken out of a race before it begins.
  • Show - When a horse comes in third place.
  • Sire - Father of a horse.
  • Stallion - Male horse that has not been gelded.
  • Stakes Race - Race which involved combining the entry fees which the horse owners put up along with funds provided by the track from betting, which are awarded to the finishers in the race.
  • Stretch - The portions of a race track that are straight.
  • Thoroughbred - A horse that can be traced back to either Darley Arabian, Godolphin Arabian (also known as Goldophin Barb), or Byerly Turk (aslso known as Byerley Turk).
  • Trainer - Individuals who is hired by the race horse owner to train the horse.
  • Win - When a horse comes in first place.
  • Trifecta - When you pick the first three winning horses in exact order in the same race.
  • Yearling - One year old horse.

    Racehorse Trivia

    Everyone has heard the expression "getting someone's goat". It means to bother or annoy someone. Where does it come from? In the past, a goat was kept in a stable with a racehorse in order to keep the horse company and to keep the horse from getting upset. An unscrupulous racehorse owner competitor would occasionally steal the goat to disturb the horse, thereby causing it to lose a race. Which brought about the saying "getting your goat", "getting his goat", or "getting their goat".

    One day, the Clerk of the Course spotted a trainer giving something to a horse just before the start of a race. He went over and said, "Doping?" The trainer said, "Indeed not, Sir. 'Tis just lump sugar. Look, I'll take a bit myself.....see?" The Clerk of the Course said, "Sorry, but we have to be careful. As a matter of fact, I like a bit of sugar myself." So the trainer gave him a piece. When the Clerk of the Course disappeared, the trainer gave his jockey his last minute instructions, "Don't forget the drill. Hold him in 'til the last four furlongs. Don't worry if anything passes you, it'll be me or the Clerk of the Course!"

    Requirements:

  • Runs with Microsoft Excel, any version, on either a PC or Mac. The program may run with other spreadsheets, such as Microsoft Works, Apple Works, etc. but was not designed for those spreadsheets.

  • For entertainment and amusement purposes only. No guarantees are expressed or implied.

  • The program is what is referred to as shareware.

    To view the program using Internet Explorer on a PC, click on the link and a dialog box will open saying 'Do you want to open or save this file?' Click open and it should automatically open in Microsoft Excel.
    To view the program using Firefox on a PC, right-click on the link, choose Save Link As, choose where you want to save it, click Save, then double Click on the file and it should automatically open in Microsoft Excel.
    To view it on a Mac with Safari or Firefox, hold down the Control key, click on the link, choose Save Link As, change the extension at the end of the file name to '.xls' and click Save. When you open the file, it should automatically open in Excel, however, Excel on the Mac will not be able to read two of the cells. This does not affect the calculations of the analyzer.
    If you have any other spreadsheet besides Excel, you can save the file with the .slk extension, then open the file from within the spreadsheet program. The following is the link to the Horserace Analyzer program:
